On Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7, 2011, the University of the Mountains, in collaboration with the Municipalities of Kandanos – Selino and Platanias, carried out a series of actions in the respective municipalities:
The four Working Groups of the University of the Mountains visited:
1. The ‘Society – Health’ group, headed by Professor of General Medicine and Primary Health Care, Director of the Clinic of Social and Family Medicine, Department of Medicine, University of Medicine, Mr. Ch. Lionis, consisting of:
(a) by the Gen. Doctors of the P.A.G.N.I. with Mr. G. Doucker in charge, in Rodovani.
(b) by the Ophthalmologists of the University General Hospital. and B.E.M.M.O. and the Mobile Ophthalmology Unit, with Mr. A. Anastasakis, Assistant Curator, in Kountoura as team leader.
(c) by the Toxicologists of P.A.G.N.I. under the supervision of Mr. E. Tzatzarakis, Lecturer of Toxicology at the Medical School, University of Crete, in Kountoura and Kandanos.
2. In Paleochora, the group ‘Culture – Timelessness’, led by Mr. Th. Detorakis, where they held a lecture on A look at the History of Selino
3. The village of Rodovani, the group ‘Education & Education’, headed by Mrs. S. Livadiotaki, School Advisor of the First Region of Heraklion. The 14th Primary School of Chania, headed by the Principal of the school P. Doumou, visited the Primary School of Rodovani, where it presented in theatrical form the theme “Water in our lives”.
Respectively, the Primary School of Rodovani, headed by the Principal of the school, Mr. K. Kalyvas, paid a visit to the local olive mill of the village.
4. Omalos, the group ‘Development – Economy – Environment’ where a conference – meeting was held on Development and Prosperity in the White Mountains, Anthropogenic Activities in the area of the White Mountains National Park, with suggestions from the following:
I. Filis, Rector of the Technical University of Crete: The importance of biodiversity in the White Mountains.
I. Klinakis, Doctor, Beekeeper: Nutritional value of honey and bee products.
M. Nikoloudis, Deputy Mayor of Apokoronas: Protection of the mountains.
I. Malandrakis, Mayor of Platanias: Parallel paths for the development of the primary and tertiary sectors.
P. Marinakis, representative of the “Iardanos” Association: Connection of the mountain range with the coastal zone.
G. Dimitriadis, BIOLEA: Organic livestock farming.
E. Benioudakis, Machine Worker: A self-supporting solar cheese factory.
A. Stefanakis, Veterinarian: Development and research in Livestock Farming.
E. Milidakis, O.A.D.Y.K. : Funded activities under European Programs in the current programming period.

This was followed by a discussion on the establishment of a Museum and Academy of Culture of the Mountains of Omalos with Mr. Th. Detorakis as rapporteur.
The meeting ended with the musical event with Michalis Tzouganakis and a traditional treat from the Municipality of Platanias at “Xyloskalo”.
