Mission Penelope Gandhi

The Holy Art of the Fabric in Crete today
Creative intervention

The Penelope Gandhi Mission team intervenes creatively in society and production, with new crops and new artisanal forms, to return to the idea, the great value and power of handmade.

It sows flax, produces silk, processes wool, produces handmade yarns, creates natural plant dyes, as a faithful continuation of the actions carried out by the women of Crete from the Minoan era!

Since 2007, it has organized more than 300 actions, on-site visits, discussions, and knowledge exchanges on the art of weaving in all villages and cities of Crete, the surrounding islands, and many places in Greece; it records and videotapes meetings with elderly master weavers and their stories, opens chests, bringing to light the woven masterpieces still preserved in their homes.

We weave knowledge, relationships, and hopes.

The “Penelope Gandhi” Mission was born with the purpose of bringing the art of weaving back into people’s lives—not just as a tradition, but as a source of knowledge, self-confidence, and collective progress. Every action serves a common goal: to unite tradition with the future.

"Knowledge without character, science without humanity, wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, business without morality, worship without sacrifice, politics without principles, the roots of misery."
M. Gandhi.
