One of the main actions of the PtO is the provision of free medical examinations to the residents of the mountainous and remote areas of the country, through monthly excursions, with the participation of a large number of volunteers: professors, doctors, nurses and students mainly of the University of Crete.
Since 2007, when this effort began, we have examined over 22,000 patients in all municipalities of Crete, in villages in mountainous and remote areas of Crete, the islands of the southern Aegean and the rest of Greece, who do not have access to primary health units, schools, prisons, orphanages, nursing homes, refugee accommodation structures and monasteries:
3,600 patient referrals for further screening in public hospitals, with obvious and recorded positive results in terms of early diagnosis of eye and other diseases that remained undiagnosed and endangered the health of these people.
13,000 on-site examinations for Ophthalmology patients,
8,600 on-site examinations for patients of other medical specialties (General Medicine, ENT, Psychiatry, Toxicology, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Gynecology, Radiology, etc.),
200 volunteer doctors of all specialties
The contribution of these medical interventions to the remote populations of the country is of unique value, because it creates a sense of security, happiness and tranquility to the residents, who enjoy free, high-quality tertiary health services in their place.
