Πηνελόπη Gandhi

The Penelope Gandhi mission is considered to be an attempt, within the framework of the Oreon University activities.  It is regarded as a non profitable operation with participants from cultural organizations and academic staff from the University of Crete and its aim is to highlight, save, preserve and spread the cultural heritage concerning the loom and textile art in Crete.

The “sacred art of textile in Crete today”, is included in the vast area of volunteer work conducted from the University of Oreon and its main aim is the resurgence of the textile art in the villages of Crete and the opportunity to contact people who represent in an authentic way the cultural tradition of the island and at the same time preserve, spread and talk about the art of the loom and of the textiles.

The mission will consist of events, site visits, discussions, exchange of opinions, recording and videotaping of the gatherings and furthermore recording of the narration concerning the preserved pieces of art and also events, exhibitions, innovative tutorial interventions, the circulation and publication of important material that deals with such activities.

The sensitization of people is our main goal and it is believed that this will contribute to the conservation of the cultural heritage and its dissemination to the generations to come.  At the same time, it will provide people and households of the suburbs with the opportunity to benefit and confront the economical and social crisis that our country is plagued by.

Environments of the Mountains

The mountainous and remote regions of Crete, as also in the rest of Greece, are threatened by economic decline, which has entailed the flee of the young people to the urban centers as well as to delinquency. In other words the uncertainty characterizing the future and the difficult

Present times are responsible for the low level of self esteem of the in inhabitants of these areas who are the vehicles of our folklore civilization.

As a result, the University of Mountains  was established as an initiative of a team of University Teachers, post-graduate students and representatives

Of the local societies. To the appeal of the above mentioned team responded enthusiastically famous personalities of letters and Arts, local vehicles and numerous simple citizens, who are very willing to contribute as much as they can, to the reversal of this negative climate and the pessimism that torment the mountainous areas .

The main goals of the University of Mountains are the following:

To support the traditional, development activities which are friendly to the environment (ecological tourism, local products, traditional jobs) with Know-how.

To study and reinforce the rich folklore tradition, which maintains to a certain degree, experiential knowledge and the values of mutual help and social offer.

To link scientific research with the needs and the reguire-ments of local societies, In other words, to make the University get out of its ivory tower.

To come up with innovative innovative in the critical sector of Education and Health.

The warm response of the population reinforces the University of Mountains

To continue its actions, realizing open discussions with the participation of all

the inhabitants of the areas that it visits.

A first approach to Health

The definition of 'health' provided by the World Health Organization seems incomplete when discussed in the context

of the remote and mountains regions. As the mountainous environments and humans are in mutual interaction, the need for the broadening of the definition of 'health' becomes demanding.

In a discussion on health in mountainous and remote areas, the primary approach and the primary thoughts arising refer to the structures ought to be developed so as prove efficient and truly contribute to the lives of those inhabiting areas away to urban centers, hence in distance to high technology. As a consequence, the initial discussion revolves around the quantity and the quality of those services, as well as the human resources which will serve in the given structures, in order to guarantee the equal providing of services, in relation to those provided in the urban and valley centers.

On the other hand, however, such a discussion should not restrict itself or tum exclusively to those service structures and their technological equipment. The discussion on health in the mountainous areas should primarily include the diverse ways of thinking and perception of the symptoms of health and its nature, along with the factors that cause them. The anthropological character given to health and disease in those remote areas has been met with special approaches and references in the relevant bibliography. Anthropologists, sociologists and health professionals have turned their interest and their research towards illness or health behavior.

A series of cultural, religious, psychological and social factors seem to interact and influence the resident of the mountainous areas, having an impact on his/her his views on health and illness and accordingly on his pursuit of health services or other indigenous healing services, a field of extreme importance in the area of health and care. Besides the importance of this anthropological study of health and illness behavior, mainly in regard to the survey of the cultural aspects of such a definition in a mountainous environment, of particular importance is also the study of the different interpretations of the symptoms by the residents ofthose areas themselves, which can lead as a consequence to the delay in diagnosing and to the inefficient therapy.

The discussion on health in those areas gets increasingly interesting when health services but also the outcome of the various therapeutic means are examined not on an individual level but on a family level, and especially on the broad family level. Families in the mountainous and isolated regions of Crete appear to consist the sole source of knowledge and infonnation throughout time, but also a means for the redistribution and production of knowledge, especially of the knowledge of self-care. That knowledge is delivered to the successors and their off-spring, creating thus concrete links between the members, especially in cases of crisis, and particularly in the case of yearly diseases or invalidation or loss of a relative or friend.

Finally, epidemiological research has proved that the frequency of yearly illnesses is different to the urban and rural areas influencing their own natural evolution, since mainly behaviorist factors appear to influence their evolution.

All of the above underline the necessity to discuss the subject of health in a broader context than usually discussed by the traditional medical schools, searching for interdisciplinary approaches, which include anthropology, sociology, education sciences and of course, all the health and care sciences.

The mingling of such many methods and techoiques from all the above fields and scientific subjects appears to be the best combination for the analysis of the defining factors of health and their translation into education, research and clinical practice. These reasons make even more demanding the discussion of the subject of health in the broader scientific, cultural, historical and biopsychosocial context, which the initiative for the University of the Mountains creates.

Funds – Financing

The activities of the University of the Mountains require economic resources to finance research as well as operating costs, e.g. salaries, material and immaterial assets, technological and other expenses, all of which ensure the effective operation of a university.

The primary objective of the University of the Mountains, which is shared by its members, is to raise funds to ensure its sustainability. It should be mentioned here that there is no specific restriction concerning the source of funds, given that they may be EU and/or national programs, endowments, grants, etc. Perhaps the only restriction is that all such funds will be dedicated to the establishment of the UoM.

Education

The philosophy of Education of the University of Mountains.

The ‘’ University of Mountains’’ is a newly established institution, with Mr ioannis Pallikaris, the Dean of the University of Crete oh the main inspirator, obviously this institution is regarded as the Quintessence of several  ideas in the framework of his scientific team

The University of Mountains responding to an exclamation of dismay: Where are the people of spirit? With the motto going as follows: man has to be the measure of all things, aims at the co-existence of scientific and experiential knowledge, at the mutuality of the scientific community and folklore wisdom, has a claim over and at the sometime attends indiscriminately the man’s existential needs.

The University of Mountains constitutes an institution of the offer of innovative actions and sciehtific services to people who have Q highly difficult access to scientific knowledge and social providence in the substantial and etymological weaning of the term.

The firm belief of the University of Mountains is that the people who work out ih the fields (and not only them)have inherited invaluable accumulated, experiential knowledge by numerous genetations through the centuries. In other words, the belief of the university of Mountains is that it can contribute to the best taking of advantage of this kind of knowledge by its possessors (that is ,the people who have this knowledge),to the common benefit or all the in habitants of this island.

Consequently, the University of Mountains aspires to make experiential knowledge be highlighted, capitalized and fertilized with scientific knowledge, wherever there is a relevance or compatibility between them ,to benefit all the people.

A positive ‘side- effect’ of an approach like this will be the essential communication aiming at the social cohesion of the Cretan people and the creation of an awareness which can ameliorate the self-perception and the confidence of the Cretan people.

This positive ‘ Side- effect’ is going to definitely result in  a bidirectional relations hip of human interaction, regardless of scientific background, experiential, human, Cretan dimensions.

A bidirectional relationship of human contact, regardless of educational background, with learning, experiential, human, Cretan dimensions.

As such, the University of Mountains is characterized and at the same time promotes an educational philosophy of the education. The belief of the University of Mountains is that the lack of education, characterizing Modern Creece, in the course of time, constitures the basic reason of our abjection nowadays, in the sense that:

Education does not have to do with the linear relation of the years of education (obligatory or not) and the consequent production of degrees (with or without face value).

Instead, education aims at the transubstantiation of knowledge scientific and experiential-into a belief and attitude of life-into an obriculate and multidimensional shaping of a critical person, participating, as an active citizen, with a specialized knowledge (both for the earrung of a living and professional), critical skills and abilities, social and consequently democratic conscience, ecological and consuming conscience, empathy and interembracing.

Enviroments of the Mountains

As regards the action of the UoM in the sector of residential environment, members of the Faculty of Architecture, led by the Dean Mr. Gryspolakis, organized a series of field trips to photograph sensitive areas in the villages of Sfakia. The aim was to provide students with the raw material for their surveys which would result in proposals for reconstruction works. The plan is to cover the entire prefecture of Chania by 2010 and then expand this project to the prefecture of Rethymnon.

In the context of the European Economic Space (EES) for the marketing of the agricultural products of Crete and the protection of the environment, ad hoc meetings were organized with local producers during the Autumn.
