Municipality of Mylopotamos - University of the Mountains

July 1-31, 2017

 

Crete holds the end of the thread steadily from the Minoan era until today, with the Mission Penelope Gandhi setting up looms in all the villages of Mylopotamos - Rethymnon.

The Municipality of Mylopotamos, with the University of the Mountains, organizes the Threads Celebrations in the villages below Psiloritis mountain.

The celebrations will take place from July 1 to 31, 2017, in which many actions will be carried out concerning the sacred art of Crete weaving and thread-meaning.

In the looms, the weavers will weave with their own Cretan threads, patterns and symbols that are the same from the time of Homer and Minos until today.

They will shear sheep hair, spin wool, flax and silk and dye threads with flowers and plants of Crete.

Small studies of the thread-workshops will take place in the villages around the settled looms where the weavers of each village will speak to the public along with personalities of letters and arts, academics, Greeks and foreigners.

Rector, Mrs. Eleni Glykatzi-Arverler, Penelope Gandhi's leading member, will launch the "Threads Celebrations" on July 12, 2017 at 19:00, at the headquarters of the University of the Mountains, Krana, at the top of Idaion Andron.

Meeting of the Pinelopi Gandhi mission volunteers and Coordination’s team on Tuesday 4th of October 2016

      On Tuesday 4th of October at 11:00, the coordinator of the Pinelopi Gandhi mission, Mrs. Barbara Terzaki-Pallikaris and the coordinating team of the Mission will meet at the Medical School of the University of Crete to discuss the activities of the Mission and make the planning of the following actions.

Excursion of the University of the Mountains to Sitia municipality, Friday 30th of September 2016

      University of the Mountains and coordination’s team will be visit the Goudouras village of Sitia municipality and offer their services for free to the inhabitants of the local area.
Professors of Medicine with doctors, Medical school students and nurses will be examine the local inhabitants.
      Additionally an innovative pedagogical intervention will take place between students of Goudouras School and the Elementary School of Piskokefalo village.  Conversation main subject will be the Sacred Weaving Art as well as porfyra shell gathering at ancient times from the island of Lefki.
      The same afternoon the General Meeting of the Members will be carried out at the central kafeneion of Goudouras village. Great scientists from the University of Crete will be there to discuss issues related to the organic production of wine, cultivation and collection of herbs, ethics and law in Cretan society and small scale economy excellent quality products and high cultural value, as well.

Audio recording of the loom - Aimonas Mylopotapos Rethymno, on Friday 15th of July 2016

     Friday at 15th of July 2016, Mr Panos Amelidis, lecturer of the Bournemouth University, Music and Audio Technology, Department of Creative Tecnology-UK, were visited the Aimonas village of Mylopotamos and made, for the first time,  an audio recording of the Cretan loom, for the purpose of a research that will take place at Bournemouth University, in regard to association of soundspace with the cultural product.

 

Pedagogical intervention at the 9th Primary School of Rethymno, on Wednesday 9th of November 2016

      The new pedagogical intervention of the University of the Mountains will be held on 9th Primary School of Rethymno at Missiria on the Sacred Weaving Art with head teacher Mrs. Penny Korres, artist. Pedagogical intervention will involve Mr. I. Pyrgiotakis prof.  of Sociology of Education-University of Crete, Mrs. B. Terzaki-Pallikaris the instigator and the spirit of Pinelopi Gandhi Mission as well as Mrs. M.Papadosifou, weaver from Amari village of Rethymno.

Excursion of the University of the Mountains to Krana, Mylopotamos on the 4th of March 2016 - General Assembly of partners

In 2016 the University of Mountains celebrates ten years since its establishment. 
Its multidimensional, social and voluntary actions aim to bring together different cultures and people and bridge the distance between agricultural societies and scientific knowledge . 
On the 4th of March 2016 in order to celebrate this anniversary, the Municipality of Milopotamos, will deliver to the University of the Mountains the building of the old elementary school of Krana, which will house the headquarters of the University of the Mountains, from now on.
The same afternoon the General Meeting of the Members will be carried out at the central kafeneion of Krana village, with the participation of great scientists from all over the world, together with the inhabitants of Mylopotamos area.
Doctors, nurses and the volunteers of the University of Mountains, will offer their services to the residents of the wider region for free. 
Additionally an innovative pedagogical intervention will take place between students of Krana school and the European School of Education,  presenting the Sacred Weaving Art with the participation of older weavers who will narrate their own special weaved and colorful stories. 

The University of the Mountains carries out meetings for further educational projects.

The University of the Mountains and the Penelope Gandhi Mission held a meeting on the 31st of January 2016 with Mrs Marianthi Liapis - Polytechnic School of Crete - architecture school, MrsTriantafyllia Giannoulaki -  Γιαννουλάκη 9th Elementary School of Chania and Mrs Athina Ntoulia School Advisor at Chania to organize further educational joint projects.

The first meeting of the Penelope Gandhi mission volunteer's and coordination's team of the new year will be held on the 25th of January 2016 at IVO - Medical School - University of Crete. During this meeting a review will be presented and the future actions will be discussed.

Doctors, University professors, nurses and expertises of all kind will offer their services for free to the inhabitants of the area.  Afterwards the kafenia of the Mountains will take place for both men and women, at Karanou and Lakkoi village. During these actions a pedagogic intervention will be taking place, attended by the students of the primary school in Alikianos and the students of 9th primary school of Chania.

During this meeting a review is organised and a schedule of the future action will be on top of this procedure.

The University of the Mountains will visit the prison of Alikarnassos. Doctors, nurses and expertises of all kind will offer their medical services for free to the prisoners. 

University of the Mountains - 2015 last actions

During 2015 the University of the Mountains has organized several actions, promoting the volunteering scheme that first started a decade ago. Up until today 25 excursions have been organized in mountainous areas around Crete.

More than 1500 people have been examined; more than 2000 people were participants in the Kafeneia of the Mountains. Moreover we brought together more than 700 students from 10 different schools who participated in the Educational Interventions under the surveillance of the Educational Team of the University of Crete.

We cultivated harvested and created linen, silk and woolen threads around Crete. We gathered flowers and plants, made natural dies, we touched laver and we weaved unique Cretan masterpieces, which are travelling around the world, to preserve the sacred art of Weaving in Crete.

On the 11th of December, at 11:00am, an Educational Intervention – Learning by teaching project will take place between students of the Margarites Primary School and the 2o Primary School in Rethimno.

The last excursion of the year will take place at Alikarnassos prison in Heraklion, next Friday, on the 18th of December. Volunteers, doctors, nurses and members of the University of the Mountains, will offer their services to the prisoners.

With the above information, we send a wish for more schools and fewer prisons to exist.

Educational Intervention - 'Interactive education' project between students - Margarites Primary School and 2o Primary School in Rethimno, 11.12.2015

An Educational Intervention - "Learning by teaching" project between students of the Margarites Primary School and 2o Primary School in Rethimno,  will take place on 11.12.2015. The University of the Mountains and the Penelope Gandhi Mission in cooperation with the Educational team of the University of Crete are organising this project in which students will talk about weaving in Crete nowadays and the way that threads are dyed naturally. 

The University of the Mountains is invited to the Contemporary Art Museum at Rethimno.

The Contemporary Art Museum in Rethimno has invited the University of the Mountains to celebrate Christmas together. Prof. I. Pallikaris and Mrs. Barbara Terzaki will gift books to the young artists of the Creative Workshops of the Museum.

On Friday 27th of November, the members and the volunteer team of the University of the Mountains will visit the municipality of Sitia, Achladia village. Doctors, University professors, nurses and expertise of all kind will offer their services for free to the inhabitants of the area.

Excursion of the University of the Mountains to Amari Municipality – Rethimnon on Friday 25th of September 2015.

On Friday 25th of September, the members and the volunteer team of the University of the Mountains will visit the municipality of Amari and more specific Agia Fotini village. Doctors, university professors, nurses and expertises of all kind will offer their services for free to the inhabitants of the area.

 

As soon as the examinations are over, the kafeneion of the mountains will take place. In Fourfouras village, men will discuss about small scale economy, the biological cultivation of olive oil and the treatment methods of olive oil extraction procedure.

 

At the same time, the members of Pinelopi Gandhi mission will hold a meeting with local women and they will discuss about the sacred art of weaving in Crete nowadays and the flax produced by the volunteers of the mission.  

Mr Pallikaris and his wife mrs Varvara Terzaki – Pallikari were invited in Pune – India for the opening ceremony of the newly launched Asian Eye Care Hospital.

 Mr Pallikaris and his wife mrs Varvara Terzaki – Pallikaris were invited in Pune – India to do the honours of the newly launched Asian Eye Care Hospital, which will be called Lasik & Smile center – Ioannis Pallikaris.

 

Vardhaman Kankariya the son of the family who owns the hospital is one of the hundred ophthalmologists who were trained next to professor Pallikaris in IVO – University of Crete.

 

The opening ceremony was held on Sunday 21st of June 2015 by the Indian President of Democracy Pratibha Tai Patilji, along with mr Pallikaris and his wife and was attended by and the science community and many executives invited.

 

This fact is a special honor for the University of Crete and our homeland.

The University of the Mountains and the Pinelopi Gandhi mission were presented to the students of Emmanouel College – Boston USA.

On Friday 19th of June 2015, the University of the Mountains team and the Pinelopi Gandhi mission were introduced to the students and professors of Emmanouel College - Boston USA, in Palaia Roumata of Chania by mr Skoulas.  Mr Vamvakas who is in charge of the college, along with the students were astonished by the process of silk production and the superb weavings of the area.

Excursion of the UoM to Sitia on 31st October 2014

 

The members and the volunteer team of the University of the Mountains will visit Tourloti village in Sitia on 31th of October. Doctors, university professors, nurses and expertises of all kind will offer their services for free to the inhabitants of the area.

An innovative project will be applied, in which the students of the Tourloti High School and the students of 1st Sitia High School are going to teach each other.

Kafeneion of the mountains will take place afterwards in which men will discuss about the production and cultivation of olive oil and the antioxidant effects of olive oil, while women will discuss about weaving methods, the significance of tradition preservance and the perfection of the unique weavings of Cretan art and their great value.

During the Symposium “Theatre, as an educational tool in society”, on Saturday 11th of October 2014, the book entitled “Theatre and Weaving art” of Lakis Kouretzis will be also presented in Androgeo venue, at the centre of Heraklion city.

The Flax Harvest Festival at the first light of the longest day of the year, June 21 2014. Reviving the ancient ceremony of producing flax – Mission Penelope Gandhi

In 2014 an event of great importance took place. Flax was cultivated anew in Crete. Flax cultivation was common until the late 19th century and was still familiar until it gradually died out 50 years ago. Thanks to the efforts of Penelope Gandhi, flax-growing was revived this year for the first time and will continue next year. The event forms part of Penelope Gandhi’s efforts to revive traditional ways of acquiring weaving yarn.

Celebrating the 100 years of the Union of Crete with Greece, with a Greek flag made by silk and weaved from volunteers of the Mission Penelope Gandhi, 1 December 2013

The Greek flag which was hoisted with soapbox celebrations, on 1 December 2013, at the Firkas fortress in Chania, on the anniversary of 100 years of the Union of Crete with Greece, was weaved with natural silk from weavers- members of the Mission Penelope Gandhi and delivered with all honors, from the University of the Mountains, to the Political and Military Authorities of the island, at a special ceremony which was held at the cultural center of Chania.

visit of the University of Mounts to the municipality of Sitia in the villages Lithines, Handras and Ziros on Friday, February  1st in 2013 was greatly accepted. The love and gratefulness, evident in the faces and behaviors of the blocked in habitants of the mountainous areas of Crete, fills our souls with the strength to continue our work.

In co-operation with the clinics of the and VEIC-Institute of optics and Vision, of Opthalmology, with the Professor Ioannis Pallikaris and the Associate Professor M.Tsilibaris, the team of the volunteer doctors, of General Medicine and the of the Primary Health care, with the Professor H.Lianis and his team, of Psychiatry with the Professor N.Paritsis and his team and of Radiology with Mr K.Psathakis, a specialist in Molecular Depiction, examined and supported about 100 inhabitants, patients, mainly very old people and children in the villages Lithines, Handras and Ziros

Mr Dimitris Karayiorgos , Assistant professor of Pedagogics in the University of Crete participated and co-ordinated the action with the head teachers and the teachers of the junior High schools in the mutual teaching between students that took place between the 2hd junior High school in Sitia and the junior High school in Handras. The students, during this interaction, developed issues relevant to the environmental sensitization, recyclihg, over-consumption, the self-management of the school canteens and the production of soap with the use of olive oil the school counselor of the regional Management of Crete, Mr Apostolos Klinakis as well as the Mayor of Sitia Mr. Th .Paterakis contributed decisively to the whole action with a lot of love.

In a meeting, in the coffee shop of the Mounts in the village Handras, scientists of vavious scientific fields that is to say, Mr. Ioannis Pallikaris, Professor of Ophthalmology of the University of Crete, Mr H.Lionis ,Professor of General Medicine of the University of Crete, Mr Dimitris Karayiorgos,Professor Assistant of Pedagogics o the University of Crete, ahd Mr Zaharias Kypriotakis, Professor of Botanology of the Technological Educational institute talked with local people issues related to local economy, to vegetable products, herbs and olive trees in agony and in a disposition to help the people of the villages in all the ways they can and by all means, so that these people can stay in their homes and, thus, create. This sort of contact also addresses the people, who leave cities and return to the villages, and encourages them to deal with the land bequeathed by their parents.

And it is, through the rural occupation that these people can live happily away from the worries of the easy financial benefit, from borrowing as well as well as from grants.

In the women’s coffee shop in the village Ziros, the distinguished president of the progressive Association of Sitia with the name ‘’Vitsentzios Kornaros’’_ Historic and Folklore Museum of Sitia.

Mrs. Stefania Mylonaki and the Association, met in an atmosphere of excellent togetherness and co-operation with Mrs. Varvara Terzaki-Pallikari and talked with the women of the region and the local weavers about the value of the  hand-made works of art as well as the value of the weaving art in Crete, about the Penelope Gandhi mission, the local techniques,the decorations and the culture of the loom.

Mrs. Anna Takaki’s (writer and poetess)presence as well as Mrs. Kate Garefalaki’s (systemic consultant of Psychology) presence were  very remarkable as well.

Also very touching were the women of the region , especially Mrs. Marika Orphanoudaki, who offered hand-made doughnuts covered in honey, to all the women present in the meeting:

Mr Ioannis Hatzadonakis (the last traditional bell holder) family who lives in the village Ziros was also very touching.

Mrs. Anna Manousaki’s (secretary of the board of the progressive Association “Vitsentzos Kornaros) contribution was also valuable and substantial in the organization and success of this meeting.

The mayor, Mr Th.Paterakis, the alderman Mr J. Hatzinakis and the alderman Mr. J Drakakis together with the presidents of the local communities of the villages Lithines, Handras and Ziros, offered hearty meals by continuing the very ancient habit of the Cretan people in an atmosphere of Joyfulness and brotherhood. 

 

Christmas Celebrations in the Art Workshops of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, Saturday 22 December at 10:30.

The Art Workshops of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, Mr. Kostas Christidis and Ms. Barbara Terzaki-Pallikari, invite the children to the yearly Christmas celebrations that will take place on Saturday 22 of December at 10:30 am.

 

The children will have the opportunity to create Christmas ornaments with various ways and to sing Christmas carols.  Children books of famous writers will be distributed to the children, an initiative of Ms. Barbara Terzaki.  These books are offers of the publishing houses of Th. Castanioti, the Labrakis Press Organization and Libro.

 

The Art Worshops would like to thank Ms. Barbara Terzaki-Pallikari for her tireless contribution to our work as well as for her support to the children of Rethymnon, already counting a decade.

Penelope Gandhi presents an Interactive Exhibition in the Basilica of San Marco from 1 to 17 November 2012 in Heraklion

Penelope Gandhi presents the first major action with an interactive exhibition, which will be held in the Basilica of San Marco, from 1 to 17 November 2012 in Heraklion. The old weavers of Crete, together with social scientists, educators, archaeologists and scientists from other disciplines will teach school children in Crete.

Additionally, in the same space Penelope Gandhi organizes experiential approaches and laboratory type discussions under the guidance of Mrs Helen Glykatzi Ahrweiler, together with the invited ladies from the Middle East and India, the local weavers and children - students. The Mission is coordinated by Mrs. Barbara Terzakis-Pallikaris.

     Lysistrati said, that she will organize the political life as she organizes her argastiri, she will cleanse and disentangle the threads, gather those that are scattered, put them all in a row and she will weave a cloak for the City...

     Ariadni held the thread-sense of civilization in Crete in her hands….

Actions of the University of the Mountains, Municipality of Kantanos-Selino, 6 & 7 May

On Friday 6 and Saturday 7 May 2011 the UoM carried out a series of actions in Kantanos-Selino and Platanias in cooperation with the corresponding municipal authorities.

Statement of the Minister of Education, Life-long Learning and Religious Matters, Mrs. Anna Diamantopoulou, during the 65th Convention in Rethymnon

I would like to make special reference to the University of the Mountains because I believe it represents a most ambitious effort and is of the highest significance for Greece as it brings knowledge closer to society and society closer to knowledge. It is an experiment which, if its results are given due consideration, it can act as a catalyst in the nature of our universities.

Solar powered cheese making unit, Madares, 18 April 2010

Attendants: 10 stockbreeders from Anopoli of Sfakia; the Rector of the UoC, prof. I. Pallikaris; the mayor of Sfakia, Mr. Sifis Lykos; the deputy mayor of Chania, Mr. Konstantinos Gyparis; the mechanical engineer Mr. Manolis Benioudakis; the beekeeper Mr. Konstantinos Hatzidakis; the stockbreeder Mr. Manolis Paterakis (from Rethymnon) and Mrs. Varvara Terzaki.

 

Mr. Pallikaris talked about UoM activities and focused on the solar powered cheese-making unit at Madares. Subsequently, Mr. Hatzidakis and Mr. Paterakis highlighted the significance of this intervention as a model for sustainable development. Next, Mr. Benioudakis presented the technical details for the cheese-making unit and answered questions by interested stockbreeders. The mayor of Sfakia focused on developmental issues in his area and on related past interventions. He found the project [solar powered cheese-making unit] very interesting and suggested that it be purchased by municipalities to be used by stockbreeders free of charge. Mr. Gyparis, the deputy mayor, also spoke highly of the project.

 

At the closing of the discussions the attendants decided that the first solar powered units be financed by the municipality of Sfakia, while Mr. Benioudakis promised to give a final quote for the cost and provide the final specifications of the machine the soonest possible.
